John 13:21-30 One of You Will Betray Me

What a title!

How would you feel if you were one of the disciples at the last supper and Jesus spoke those words?

Would you feel fear? Betrayal? Anger? Guilt? Sadness? Astonishment? Shock?

Maybe some of each.

The one that stands out most to me would be shock.

I know many things have happened the last few days. Lazarus was raised from the dead, many people welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem, many people left and now this.

Surely Jesus was just feeling overwhelmed with the events of the last days. No one of the disciples would betray Him. None of the closest friends would even entertain the idea.

Maybe if we just stop and take a breath here......

I think, in a small way, we all have betrayed Him to some degree. Maybe not to the point of death but by making those choices that would seem to crucify Him a little more.

It's hard to always make those right choices. Not to make light of what Judas did, but in a lessor way, perhaps we are all guilty.

The amazing thing here is Jesus' way of pointing out the offender. He could have just pointed His finger at Judas Declaring him the evil one. He could have just said " get him, men!". He could have done a lot of things.

He didn't.

He offered Judas a morsel of bread dipped in whatever sauce or gravy they were using. He offered his food to Judas. He offered fellowship to Judas. He offered friendship to Judas.

Right to that very point, Judas could have turned his heart to Jesus and been accepted with open arms.

I think Jesus would offer us the same morsel of bread. Right up until we make that choice to run away He is saying "Come on back", "It's not too late" "Welcome home".

What would you choose?
