John 12:20-26 Some Greeks Seek Jesus
It wasn't just any "Greeks". It was "some Greeks"!
This is another passage that, if just reading over to get to the end of our "daily reading plan", we could easily miss.
In fact, the statement "Sir, we would see Jesus" was posted on the wall of the church I went to when I was a younger Christian. Even though I saw this for several years, several times each week, I still missed it.
Here are some Greeks that have come to talk to Jesus.
Was Jesus impressed? Here some of the "enlightened ones" that have come to discuss His cause. Greeks were well known for trying to find truth wherever it may be. Not necessarily to be changed by the truth. Simply to be enlightened by knowledge of the truth.
Jesus speaks directly to their need to hear the truth while putting them in a position of decision.
It is not nearly enough to know the truth, you must react to the truth for it to be of value to you.
Jesus was on a schedule so in a brief statement He told them exactly what they needed to hear. This statement would judge them for good or bad with how they reacted.
Jesus's statement also speaks to all that would call themselves "Christians".
He said that a grain of wheat remains alone unless it falls into the ground and dies. Only then can it bear fruit.
Option #1 is not the right choice. We see right afterwards, Jesus clarifies the right choice.
He says my servants follow me. He also said where I am my servants will be.
We know, in context, that Jesus is speaking of His death on the cross.
So if the gospel you received was one of prosperity, self enlightenment, self fulfillment, and self purpose then you need to go hear the gospel again.
Jesus's gospel includes death of self, purpose to glorify Him, and laying our lives down for people that don't love us don't accept us, don't appreciate us.
Sounds like wonderful news doesn't it! Fortunately for us it doesn't end there.
Eternity with the Father is amazing good news.
But to get there we must follow Jesus in death. At least to ourselves in this life.
